Beats:
Each week, I will be posting my "Beats of the Week"! For this segment of the blog, I will choose five songs, one from each genre of music: pop, rock, hip-hop, country, and jazz. I will give a brief synopsis and review of each song in the hopes that you might add a new song to your playlist. Check out this week's beats!
Pop - Wildflower by Billie Eilish:
"Wildflower" is a hauntingly contemplative track by Billie Eilish, released as the fifth song on her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, on May 17, 2024. Co-written with her brother Finneas, the song explores the emotional complexity of comforting a friend after a breakup, only to later date their ex, with lyrics that delve into guilt and lingering thoughts. Its stripped-back production and Eilish’s ethereal vocals create a poignant atmosphere, earning praise as a standout from the album. The title is speculated to nod to Wildflower Cases, a brand tied to her personal connections, adding a layer of intrigue to its meaning.
Rock - Like A Stone by Audioslave:
"Like a Stone" is a powerful and introspective track by Audioslave, released as the second single from their self-titled debut album in 2002. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the song melds haunting lyrics with his soulful vocals, reflecting on mortality, regret, and the search for redemption. Its driving guitar riffs, courtesy of Tom Morello, and the tight rhythm section from Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford create a timeless rock anthem. The track became one of Audioslave’s most iconic hits, peaking at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and cementing their supergroup legacy. Cornell later revealed the song’s inspiration came from imagining an old man awaiting death, adding a poignant depth to its emotional weight.
Hip-Hop - A Cold Sunday by Lil Yachty:
"A Cold Sunday" is a jazzy, introspective single by Lil Yachty, released on February 2, 2024, as the lead track from his EP Something Ether. Produced by Aris Tatalovich, the song features a soulful, chopped-up guitar sample and boom-bap undertones, showcasing Yachty’s smooth flow over a reflective beat. In under two minutes, he raps about fame’s challenges, personal struggles, and material excess, with lines like “It’s a cold Sunday to complain / I hold it in until it rain / I fought demons after fame.” The accompanying video, directed by AMD Visuals, presents Yachty performing across multiple screens against a minimalist backdrop, emphasizing the track’s moody vibe. Critics praised its lyrical dexterity and cozy atmosphere, marking it as a strong continuation of Yachty’s creative evolution post-Let’s Start Here.
Country - Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker:
"Wagon Wheel" by Darius Rucker, released in 2013 as the lead single from his album True Believers, is a spirited country rendition of Old Crow Medicine Show’s folk classic. Originally co-written by Ketch Secor and Bob Dylan, Rucker’s version swaps banjo twang for polished Nashville production, highlighting his warm, gravelly vocals. The song tells the tale of a hitchhiker trekking south to reunite with his love, with its catchy chorus—“Rock me mama like a wagon wheel”—resonating widely. It soared to number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and earned triple Platinum status, bridging country and pop audiences. Rucker’s soulful take, paired with a lively fiddle, brought the track a fresh mainstream shine while honoring its rootsy spirit. Critics lauded it as a career-defining hit, cementing his transition from Hootie & the Blowfish frontman to country star.
Jazz - I've Got The World On A String by Frank Sinatra:
"I’ve Got the World on a String" by Frank Sinatra, recorded in 1953 for Capitol Records, is a jubilant showcase of his early swing-era charm. Written in 1932 by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler, the song captures an infectious optimism, with Sinatra’s silky voice gliding over Nelson Riddle’s lush, upbeat arrangement. Lyrics like “I’m sitting on a rainbow” reflect a man reveling in love and life’s highs, perfectly suited to Sinatra’s confident delivery. Released as a single and later featured on his 1957 compilation This Is Sinatra!, it became a staple of his live performances. The track exemplifies his knack for blending jazz-inflected phrasing with emotional depth, solidifying his status as a crooner king. Its timeless swagger still radiates, a snapshot of Sinatra at his buoyant best.

MLB Spring Training & 2025 Season:
The New York Yankees are spotlighted with high expectations thanks to their formidable lineup, including Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger. Analysts are projecting them as serious contenders in the American League. Other teams like the Dodgers, with their potent offense, and the Phillies, known for their pitching depth, are also under the microscope. Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System:
Thirteen spring training stadiums will experiment with an automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system this year. This system allows players or managers to challenge calls made by the home plate umpire, with the ABS making the final decision. This trial is a crucial step towards potentially adopting this technology league-wide by 2026, aiming to increase accuracy in calls and potentially change the dynamics of the game.
Pete Alonso's Impact at Mets Spring Training:
Pete Alonso, affectionately known as "Polar Bear," has returned to the Mets' spring training. His presence is not just about his power at the plate; it's also about leadership and team morale. After a season where he showed both highs and lows, expectations are high for Alonso to anchor the Mets' lineup and possibly lead them back to contention in the competitive NL East.
Nolan Arenado's Commitment to Cardinals Camp:
Despite rumors and speculation regarding his future, Nolan Arenado has reported to Cardinals spring training. His arrival is seen as a reaffirmation of his commitment to St. Louis, where he has been a cornerstone of the infield. This story looks into what Arenado's presence means for the Cardinals' strategy and morale, especially after a season where they fell short of expectations.
