Beats:
Every week, I will be posting my "Beats of the Week"! For this segment of the blog, I will be choosing five songs, one from each genre of music: pop, rock, hip-hop, country, and jazz. I will be giving a brief review of each song, along with my reasoning as to why I believe they are worth a listen. Here are this week's best beats!
Pop - "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter (Best Pop Solo - Grammys 2025):
"Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter is a catchy pop anthem that became one of the standout hits of 2024. Released in April of 2024, the song quickly climbed the charts, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping charts in countries like the UK, Australia, and Ireland. Its playful lyrics about the intoxicating effect of attraction, likened to the stimulating effect of espresso, encapsulate Carpenter's signature blend of self-awareness and cheekiness. The track, which also features a memorable hook, "That's that me, espresso," was praised for its infectious melody and has been associated with the summer of 2024, even becoming a contender for 'song of the summer.' Ultimately, "Espresso" earned Carpenter a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance on Sunday.
Rock - "Broken Man" by St. Vincent (Best Rock Song - Grammys 2025):
"Broken Man" by St. Vincent clinched Best Rock Song at the 2025 Grammys from her album All Born Screaming. This track is known for its intense guitar work and profound lyrics about vulnerability, with Dave Grohl's drumming adding to its raw power. Its success highlighted St. Vincent's versatility and solidified her standing in rock music.
Hip-Hop - "Not Like Us" by Kendrick Lamar (Song of the Year - Grammys 2025):
"Not Like Us" by Kendrick Lamar is a scathing diss track aimed at Drake, released in May 2024, that became a cultural phenomenon and swept the 2025 Grammys, winning five awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Produced by Mustard, the song features a hyphy-influenced West Coast hip-hop beat with sharp lyrics accusing Drake of cultural appropriation and inappropriate behavior. Its infectious hook and bold allegations fueled its rise to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, while its music video, filled with symbolic imagery, further amplified its impact. The track's success marked a historic moment, making it the most decorated song in Grammy history and solidifying Lamar's dominance in the rap feud. Catch the newly decorated artist Kendrick Lamar during the Apple Music Halftime Show at Super Bowl LIX this Sunday!
Country - "Texas Hold 'Em" by Beyoncé (From Best Album of the Year & Country Album of the Year "Cowboy Carter" - Grammys 2025):
"Texas Hold 'Em" by Beyoncé, from her 2024 album Cowboy Carter, became an instant classic this past year, clinching nine Grammy nominations and winning Best Country Album in 2025. With its infectious country-pop fusion and banjo hooks, the song not only topped the charts but also sparked discussions on Black identity in country music, showcasing Beyoncé's genre-defying prowess. Many people have also begun to question genre authenticity as well as the perceived influence of Beyoncé's celebrity status on the Grammy Outcomes. Regardless of the debates surrounding her big wins on Sunday, Beyonce officially holds the title of most-awarded artist in Grammys history with 35!
Jazz - "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me" by Samara Joy feat. Sullivan Fortner (Best Jazz Performance & Best Jazz Album - Grammys 2025):
Bleachers:
Welcome to the "Bleachers"! Here, we will take a dive into the thrilling world of sports, bringing you anything from the latest highlights, game analyses, athletic achievements, and much more! Whether you're celebrating a big play or witnessing a nail-biting finish, the bleachers are where the magic of sports truly comes alive. This week, we will be covering three blockbuster NBA trades of the Trade Deadline. Plus, I will be making a score prediction for the Super Bowl!
Trades:
First, there have been several NBA trades ahead of tomorrow afternoon's 2:00 PM deadline. A few of which, however, were rather shocking. The trades listed below made my top three due to their blockbuster nature, involving star players and significant future assets, reshaping team rosters, and altering the competitive landscape of the NBA for this season and beyond. Here are the trades that made the list:
Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis (2025):
- Teams Involved: Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and Utah Jazz (three-team trade).
- Details:
- Lakers receive: Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris.
- Mavericks receive: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 LAL 1st-round pick.
- Jazz receive: Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2025 Clippers 2nd-round pick, 2025 Mavericks 2nd-round pick.
- Impact: This trade has been described as one of the most shocking in NBA history due to the exchange of two superstar players. The Lakers acquire a young, MVP-caliber player in Dončić, significantly boosting their championship prospects for years to come. Meanwhile, the Mavericks get Davis, a dominant force in the paint, but lose their franchise cornerstone.
De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs (2025):
- Teams Involved: Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, and Chicago Bulls (three-team deal).
- Details:
- Spurs receive: De'Aaron Fox, Jordan McLaughlin.
- Kings receive: Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, three first-round picks, three second-round picks.
- Bulls receive: Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and their own 2025 first-round pick.
- Impact: Fox joins Victor Wembanyama, potentially creating one of the most exciting young duos in the league. The Kings, looking to rebuild, receive substantial draft capital and a high-scoring guard in LaVine, setting them up for future success.
Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors (2025):
Teams Involved: Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and others in a multi-team trade scenario.
Details:
Warriors receive: Jimmy Butler.
Heat receive: Andrew Wiggins, a protected first-round pick, among other considerations in a complex deal.
Impact: This move was significant as Butler, a six-time All-Star, aims to join forces with Stephen Curry to form a new dynamic duo in Golden State, potentially extending their championship window. For the Heat, Wiggins provides a different skill set, but they lose a key player in Butler, which could affect their immediate competitiveness.
