Beats:

I will post my "Beats of the Week" each week! For this segment of the blog, I will choose five songs, one from each genre of music: pop, rock, hip-hop, country, and jazzI will give a brief synopsis and review of each song in the hopes that you might add a new song to your playlist.

Pop: Castle on the Hill -- Ed Sheeran

"Castle on the Hill," released in 2017 from Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) album, is a nostalgic pop-rock anthem that hits you right in the heart. Sheeran paints a vivid picture of his Suffolk roots, reminiscing about wild teenage days—racing down hills, sneaking smokes, and chasing dreams with friends. The soaring chorus, backed by driving guitars and a stadium-ready beat, captures that bittersweet ache of growing up and looking back. It’s a love letter to youth and home, blending raw emotion with an irresistible singalong vibe. Fun fact: Ed wrote it about Framlingham Castle, tying his personal story to a real-life landmark. This track’s a go-to for anyone craving a dose of wistful, feel-good energy.

Rock: "The Middle" -- Jimmy Eat World

"The Middle," dropped in 2001 from Jimmy Eat World’s Bleed American album, is a punk-rock lifeline for anyone feeling lost or out of place. Jim Adkins belts out an upbeat pep talk, urging a struggling teen to shake off the doubters and just be herself—complete with crunchy guitars and a hook that sticks like glue. It’s all about that raw, relatable moment of pushing through the mess of growing up. Released post-9/11, it became an accidental anthem of resilience, hitting the Billboard Top 5. The Arizona quartet nailed that sweet spot of emo vulnerability and rock energy, making it a timeless banger for misfits everywhere.

Hip-Hop: "Old Time Road" -- Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus

"Old Town Road," unleashed in 2019 by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, is a genre-bending banger that lassoed the world with its trap-country swagger. Montero Hill (Lil Nas X) spins a tale of riding horses and living free, blending twangy banjos with booming 808s in a way that’s pure ear candy. It started as a viral TikTok hit, then smashed records, holding the Billboard Hot 100 top spot for 19 weeks—longest ever. The remix with Cyrus added gritty cred, bridging hip hop and country like a musical Wild West. It’s a defiant, fun flex on haters, proving a kid from Atlanta could rewrite the rules and ride off into history.

Country: "Cruise" -- Florida Georgia Line

"Cruise," released in 2012 by Florida Georgia Line from their Here’s to the Good Times album, is a sun-soaked country-pop jam that screams summer vibes. Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley croon about rolling down backroads with a girl, windows down, and radio up, all wrapped in a catchy, feel-good hook. It’s pure tailgate energy—laid-back yet rowdy, with a slick beat that begs you to sing along. The 2013 remix with Nelly tossed in some hip-hop flair, sending it to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and multiplatinum status. This track put the duo on the map, blending bro-country swagger with crossover appeal that still revs up playlists.

Jazz: "I Thought About You" -- Frank Sinatra

"I Thought About You," crooned by Frank Sinatra in 1956, is a swinging jazz standard that captures longing with a velvet touch. Penned by Johnny Mercer and Jimmy Van Heusen, it’s a wistful tale of a train ride sparking memories of a lost love, delivered in Sinatra’s signature smooth-as-silk style. Nelson Riddle’s lush big-band arrangement—brassy yet tender—lifts the track into a timeless swoon. Recorded during Sinatra’s Capitol golden era, it’s a masterclass in vocal finesse, peaking with that effortless charm that made him the voice. This classic still tugs at heartstrings, blending romance and melancholy into a three-minute masterpiece.

Bleachers:

Welcome to the "Bleachers"! Here, we will take a dive into the thrilling world of sports, bringing you anything from the latest highlights, game analyses, athletic achievements, and much more! Whether you're celebrating a big play or witnessing a nail-biting finish, the bleachers are where the magic of sports truly comes alive. This week, we will be talking about the build-up of March Madness!

March Madness Build-Up:

The College Basketball March Madness Build-Up refers to the exciting lead-up to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament, commonly known as "March Madness." This period, particularly in late February and early March, is when the college basketball season shifts into high gear as teams vie for spots in the 68-team tournament, which determines the national champion. Since today is March 6, 2025, we’re right in the thick of this build-up phase for the 2025 tournament, with conference tournaments starting and Selection Sunday (March 16) fast approaching.
Key Elements of the Build-Up:
1. Conference Play Wrap-Up
By early March, most teams have completed or are finishing their regular-season schedules. This is a critical time for teams to solidify their resumes—wins against top opponents, avoiding bad losses, and performing well in conference standings all factor into their tournament chances. For example, right now, teams like Tennessee, Auburn, or Purdue might be making headlines with big wins or upsets, shaping their seeding prospects.
2. Conference Tournaments
Starting in early March (many tip off this week), these tournaments are make-or-break for automatic bids. There are 32 Division I conferences, and each winner earns a guaranteed spot in March Madness, regardless of their regular-season record. This week, you’ll see smaller conferences like the Horizon League or Atlantic Sun crown champs, while power conferences (Big Ten, SEC, etc.) follow later. These games often produce "bid stealers"—teams that snag an auto-bid and shake up the bracket for bubble teams.
3. Bracketology Intensifies
Analysts like ESPN’s Joe Lunardi or NCAA.com’s Andy Katz are updating their bracket predictions daily now. As of March 6, 2025, they’re factoring in results from the weekend—like a Tennessee buzzer-beater over Alabama or Michigan State's dominance—to project the 68-team field. The "bubble" (teams on the edge of inclusion) gets tons of attention, with fans debating who’s in or out based on metrics like NET rankings (a key NCAA tool measuring team performance).
4. Selection Sunday Looming
The build-up peaks on Selection Sunday, set for March 16, 2025. That’s when the NCAA Selection Committee reveals the full bracket—seeds, matchups, and all. Leading up to it, the committee is crunching data: wins/losses, strength of schedule, and quality wins (categorized into Quadrants 1-4). Teams are fighting for at-large bids (36 available after the 32 auto-bids), and every game this week could tip the scales.
5. Fan and Media Hype
The energy is palpable—social media buzzes with highlights, upset alerts, and hot takes. Sports outlets churn out stories on Cinderella hopefuls (mid-majors with upset potential), top seeds (like a potential #1 Auburn or Duke), and bubble drama. Players become household names, and campuses turn into rallying points.
What’s Happening Right Now (March 4, 2025)
  • Early Conference Tournaments: Some smaller leagues are already underway or tipping off soon. A team like Chattanooga (SoCon) or Akron (MAC) could lock in their bid by week’s end.
  • Power Conference Showdowns: Big games from the week are still rippling—think a classic college basketball rivalry game like Duke v. North Carolina.
  • Bubble Watch: Teams like Ohio State, Nebraska, or Arkansas (based on typical bubble chatter) are sweating out every result. A loss now could mean NIT instead of NCAA.

Why It Matters:

The build-up isn’t just prep—it’s chaos and drama in real time. A single game can catapult a team from unranked to a tournament lock or drop a favorite to the bubble. By March 18, when the First Four starts in Dayton, Ohio, the field is set, but this week shapes it. The 2025 tournament will run through April 7, ending with the championship at the Alamodome in San Antonio, and the stories emerging now—upsets, heroics, collapses—set the tone for the madness ahead.

That's a wrap for this week's "Beats & Bleachers"! Thanks for tuning in! I hope you enjoyed my "Beats of the Week," as well as my breakdown of the build-up to March Madness. Whether you were here for the music, the sports, or both, I appreciate you joining me.
